Silvia was hired by my former hospital and challenged to properly develop a poorly conceived, fledgling language interpretation program that had been in place for several years.  She did just that.  She pulled together our Limited English Proficiency Committee, developed the Cross Cultural Communications department, developed policies and procedures, hired, trained, and managed interpreters, rewrote and appropriately translated documents, and constantly evolved the program to better serve LEP patients and families, winning several external recognitions (NQF and AMA) for the effectiveness of her efforts in enhancing patient safety and patient centeredness.  She is an extraordinary professional whom I am privileged to know.
